    FDA URGED TO DITCH DARVON

Old painkiller is a plain old killer, Public Citizen argues

New data from Europe and U.S. medical examiners’ reports provide further evidence that a widely prescribed painkiller should be banned.

Sidney Wolfe, M.D., director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group, testifying today before a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee, pointed to information from the Federal Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) in 2007 that found 503 deaths determined by medical examiners to be related to the use of propoxyphene, known commercially as Darvon.

Two-thirds of the deaths were determined to be accidental. Jurisdictions reporting to the DAWN system represent about 36 percent of the U.S. population, but are more represented in metropolitan areas.

In Florida, medical examiners are instructed to “distinguish between the drugs being the ‘cause’ of death or merely ‘present’ in the body at the time of death.” Thus, in 2007 in Florida alone there were 85 deaths in which propoxyphene was the cause of death, including 25 cases in which it was the only drug present. As in the national data, the majority of the deaths were ruled accidental, not suicidal.

    CUT THE CABLE WITH IPTV

    By Jay MacDonald

Fed up with paying, on average, $59 a month for cable or satellite TV? Tired of ordering your life around their schedule?

Cut the cable and instead watch your favorite shows for free via the Internet 24/7 on your home computer, laptop or even your iPhone.

Streaming video of everything from classic movies to hit TV programs to screaming music videos of ’80s hair bands is available free at online portals YouTube and Joost, as well as Hulu.com (a joint venture of NBC and Fox) and the networking site MySpace, which is owned by the same company as Fox.

Similar online portals from the three major U.S. networks feature many couch-potato favorites just hours after they air in prime time, as well as vintage TV dating back to the black-and-white days.

Get your weekly dose of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost” and “Ugly Betty” at ABC.com. Over at NBC.com, they’re serving “30 Rock,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Law & Order,” as well as classics like “The A Team” and “Miami Vice” (nice suit, Tubbs!).
