8 TUITION-FREE COLLEGES

By Scott Allen, Mental_Floss.com

During difficult economic times, the cost of higher education leaves many students wondering if they can afford to go to college. For those who want to avoid being saddled with huge loans, the U.S. government offers one of the best deals around: Enroll at one of the five service academies tuition-free and receive free room and board. (And you thought the Grand Slam promotion at Denny’s was cool.) But if military service isn’t for you, here are eight other schools that offer tuition-free educations:

1. College of the Ozarks

ozarks

Several schools share the “Linebacker U” and “Quarterback U” monikers in reference to the NFL talent that their college football programs produce, but the only “Hard Work U” is located in Point Lookout, Missouri. In 1973, a Wall Street Journal reporter bestowed that title on the College of the Ozarks, where students pay no tuition and work at least 15 hours a week at a campus work station. Jobs are taken seriously at the school of 1,400; students are graded on their work performance in addition to their academics.

2. Deep Springs College

DEEP SPRINGS

Deep Springs is a two-year, all-male liberal arts college located on a cattle ranch and alfalfa farm in the Inyo-White Mountains of California’s High Desert. To get an idea of just how isolated the school is, consider the explanation for its policy forbidding smoking in any of the school’s buildings or near hay bales: “We’re 45 minutes from the nearest emergency services, so a fire could be disastrous.” Every student admitted – 10 to 15 per year – receives free tuition, room, and board, and works at least 20 hours a week on the ranch. The manual labor ranges from washing dishes to milking cows. Most students complete their degrees at prestigious four-year schools after leaving Deep Springs.

HOW TO REPORT ONLINE FRAUD, SCAMS AND THEFT

s-tips-right-kim-pic
From Kim Komando’s Tip Of The Day

The Web can be a scary place. Phishing scams show up in your e-mail inbox. Employment scams litter job search sites. Criminals attempt to steal your information with malware.

Every Internet user has to know how to avoid online crime. I’ve written plenty of great tips on this subject.  Check them out and you’ll be able to spot these scams.

But accidents do happen. Many smart, responsible people fall victim to online crime. Criminals are always innovating. And in some respects, we’re always playing catch up.

But to whom do you report online crime and scams? You can’t pick up the phone and call 911. Many criminals aren’t even in the United States. How can you help shut them down?

There is no Internet police force. But there are places to report online criminals. Some can take legal action. Others can shut down scams in different ways.

Scams on Google

Google works hard to keep scams and fraud out of its services. But a few things are bound to slip through. If you spot something, you can report it to Google.

Google’s most popular product is quality search results. But many people try to game the system. Scams can end up in search results. These sites could simply be spam. Or they can contain links to malicious sites. Some may even redirect you to other sites forcefully.

You can report these bad search results here. Include the exact query you used in the search. And you’ll need the URL for the search results page. Enter as much information as possible. It will help Google track down and remove these sites.

Google ads can be another tool used by scammers. These ads appear on thousands of Web sites (including this one). Sometimes inappropriate or malicious ads get through. If you spot one, report it here.

Bad business

If you don’t stick to reputable sites, shopping online can be dangerous. You can lose money and personal information to deceptive retailers. Once you’ve been had, dealing with them can be a pain.

Luckily, you don’t have to go it alone. Several agencies can help you resolve complaints. First is the Better Business Bureau. You can lodge a complaint here.  It will act as a mediator between you and the company.

Along the same lines, you should contact your state attorney general’s office. It has the tools to resolve your complaint. You can find a complete list of AGs on this site.

Report serious crime

Resolving a complaint is one thing. But more other authorities may be needed to investigate serious online crime. Report online crime to the Internet Crime Complaint Center. It’s a joint operation between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center. It tracks and investigates online crime. And it will forward your case to the proper law enforcement agency.

If you’re afraid your identity is at risk, take additional action. Identity theft is a huge problem. So, the credit bureaus have created tools to help. A credit freeze can save you a lot of trouble. Learn all about using this tool and more here.

Fraudulent e-mail

You also need to worry about what’s in your inbox. Everyone receives spam and phishing messages. Don’t even open these. And certainly don’t click included links or reply to them.

Several programs can help you avoid spam. Try xTerminator, MailWasher or SpamBayes. All of these will reduce the spam you receive.

You can also forward spam to the Federal Trade Commission at spam@uce.gov. Phishing messages are a more serious threat. This tip will show you what to do with them.

More ways to stay safe online:

Be sure you’re giving to reputable charities
Get free software to protect your computer

HARD-CORE GAMING MINUS THE HARDWARE

gaming-console

OnLive Promises Hard-Core Gaming Minus the Hardware

By Renay San Miguel, TechNewsWorld

The first tech media darling has already blasted its way through the clutter at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco — OnLive, the new company to come from longtime serial tech entrepreneur Steve Perlman.

Phrases like “game changer” are being tossed about to describe OnLive’s technology, which essentially creates the new category of cloud gaming for play on computers and TVs. Forget about pricey consoles, fingerprint-smudged game discs and Xbox Red Rings of Death; a new video compression system developed by OnLive means the company’s servers can host all the gaming technology like rendering and storage. All the gamer would have to do is log on and start playing. The company is promising no lag time on its streams.

OnLive will support PCs and Macs, but consumers will need to buy a paperback book-sized mini-console and accompanying controller if they want to play games in 720p HD on their big-screen TVs. No prices have been announced yet.

TAXPAYER RIGHTS

TAXPAYER RIGHTS

Check taxpayer rights with one click

By Kay Bell

Few people are looking for a fight with the Internal Revenue Service. But if you do happen to have problems with the agency this tax season — or anytime — there’s a Web site you can visit for help.

The IRS has placed all taxpayer rights information in one Internet location. Its Taxpayer Rights Corner consolidates data that previously was scattered throughout the agency’s main Web site.

Created as a “one-stop taxpayer shop,” the site was created by the reorganized agency to meet congressional orders that taxpayers receive better treatment. Web topics range from basic taxpayer information, to details on IRS examination and collection procedures, to a how-to on getting help from the IRS.

HONEST SCRAP AWARD – THANKS RICK!

Honest_Scrap

I want to thank Rick from Rick’s World for giving me this award.  The following is a description and the requirements of the award.  (Copied from Rick’s blog):

“This award is bestowed upon a fellow blogger whose blog’s content or design is, in the giver’s opinion, brilliant.”
Again, quoting from Kuya Goddy’s blog, here are the requirements:

“When accepting this auspicious award, you must write a post bragging about it, including the name of the misguided soul who thinks you deserve such acclaim, and link back to the said person so everyone knows she/he is real. Choose a minimum of seven (7) blogs that you find brilliant in content or design. Or improvise by including bloggers who have no idea who you are because you don’t have seven friends. Show the seven random victims’ names and links and leave a harassing comment informing them that they were prized with Honest Weblog. Well, there’s no prize, but they can keep the nifty icon. List at least ten (10) honest things about yourself. Then pass it on!”

Here’s my 10 honest things:

  1.  I love animals and would practically have a zoo in my home if I could afford it.

  2.  Some days, I feel as though my home is a zoo, lol.

  3.  I have 3 brothers and 1 sister.

  4.  I am the youngest in my family.

  5.  My full name is Sandra Dee.  (My sister’s idea)

  6.  I used to be extremely and painfully shy.

  7.  I still am sometimes.

  8.  Fall is my favorite season.

  9.  Christmas is my favorite holiday.

10.  I never learned how to swim.  (We have that in common Rick! :-) )

Now, I have to pass this award on to at least 7 bloggers I feel deserve it:

  1.  Tammy from Mom Knows Everything and A Little Girl Talk

  2.  Lisa from Straight Talk On Relationships

  3.  Shane from Ask Shane

  4.  Colorado Baby from Honey Bunches Of Stuff

  5.  DD2 aka Debonair Dude from Our World As We See It

  6.  Tina from Mummy Diaries

  7.  Webgyver

WHITE HOUSE BLOG

WHITE HOUSE

You can write to the President and let him know your concerns.

I wrote a short letter about the health care crisis.   I know he has heard it many, many times already, but it can’t hurt to have more people express concern.  I’m just so tired of slipping through the cracks in the system.  It’s a disgrace that so many are unable to get the medical treatment, medications, and testing they badly need.   I’m one of those people.

There is the White House Blog , the White House YouTube channel and the Contact Form which you can use to write to the President and his staff.
