NESTLE RECALLS LEAN CUISINE MEALS

Chicken dinners recalled due to plastic pieces

Nestle Prepared Foods is having more plastic problems. The company has announced a recall of over 875,000 pounds of frozen Lean Cuisine chicken meals because they may contain small pieces of hard plastic.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service says the following products are subject to the recall:

• 9.5-ounce packages of “LEAN CUISINE PESTO CHICKEN WITH BOW TIE PASTA” brand frozen meals. Printed on each side of each package is a production code of “8280595912″ as well as a use-by date of “Best Before MAY 2010.”

• 10.5-ounce packages of “LEAN CUISINE CHICKEN MEDITERRANEAN” brand frozen meals. Printed on the side of each package is a production code of “8231595912″ or “8241595912″ as well as a use-by date of “Best before SEP 2010″; a production code of “8263595912,” “8269595911″ or “8274595912,” as well as a use-by date of “Best before OCT 2010″; or, a production code of “8291595912″ or “8301595912″ as well as a use-by date of “Best before NOV 2010.”

• 12.5-ounce packages of “LEAN CUISINE CHICKEN TUSCAN” brand frozen meals. Printed on the side of each package is a production code of “8234595911″ and a use-by date of “Best before SEP 2009″; a production code of “8253595911″ or “8269595912″ as well as a use-by date of “Best before OCT 2009″; or, a production code of “8292595911″ or “8296595911″ as well as a use-by date of “Best before NOV 2009.”

Each package also bears the USDA mark of inspection as well as the establishment number “EST P-9018.” The frozen chicken meals were produced on Aug. 18, Aug. 21, Aug. 28, Sept. 9, Sept. 19, Sept. 25, Sept. 30, Oct. 6, Oct. 17-18, Oct. 22 and Oct. 27 and were distributed to retail establishments nationwide.

GENERAL RECALLS TOY BOATS

Dollar General is recalling about 200,000 toy speed boats because the batteries can overheat.

Dollar General has received two reports of the batteries overheating. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled toy speed boats are lightweight plastic toy boats supported by an inflatable hull with “outboard” motors on them. The motor uses two AA batteries. The toy boat measures about 12 inches long by 8 inches wide and comes in various colors and designs.

Dollar General stores nationwide sold the boats, which were made in China, from March 2008 through July 2008 for $3 each.

Consumers should take these toys away from young children and return them to the store where purchased for a refund or replacement product.

EMPRESS RECALLS CHILDREN’S SWEATERS

Empress Arts is recalling about 130 children’s sweaters with drawstrings.

Children can get entangled in the drawstrings that can catch on playground equipment, fences or tree branches.

In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstring in upper garments, such as jackets and sweatshirts. From 1985 through 2007, CPSC received reports of 27 deaths and 70 non-fatal incidents involving the entanglement of children’s clothing drawstrings.

The cotton knit sweaters are cream colored with a blue stripe at the wrists and waist, a blue ball on the hood, and blue buttons. There is a drawstring through the hood with pom-poms at the ends. The sweaters were sold in children’s size 2T under the brand name “Empress Arts.” “Empress Baby” is sewn into the sweaters tag.

The sweaters were sold at specialty children’s stores nationwide from August 2006 through April 2008 for between $28 and $45. They were made in China.

Consumers should immediately remove the drawstrings from the sweaters to eliminate the hazard.

RAPID REEL RECALLS HOSE CARTS

Rapid Reel is recalling about 7,000 portable garden hose reel carts and wagons. The tires on the portable garden hose reel can explode while being inflated, posing an injury hazard to consumers.

Rapid Reel has received five reports of tires exploding while being inflated, resulting in lacerations to fingers, arms, and legs from flying pieces of plastic.

This recall involves the Rapid Reel portable garden hose reel carts and wagons. The cart has two tires and the wagon has four. The tires have a white plastic rim and a steel ball bearing hub or a black plastic bearing hub.

The carts were sold by home repair retailers and distributors such as Ace Hardware, Amazon.com, and True Value Hardware nationwide from April 2005 through March 2006 for between $190 and $250. They were made in China.

Consumers should not inflate tires on the portable hose carts and should contact Rapid Reel for free replacement tires.

TARGET RECALLS CIRCO CHILDREN’S BOBBIE SOCKS

Target is recalling about 330,000 pairs of Circo Rosette bobbie socks. The ribbon on the sock can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Target has received four reports of the ribbon detaching. No injuries have been reported.

The recall involves girls Circo bobbie socks. The socks were sold in packs of six (pink, purple, plain white and three pairs with a box), ranging in size from 6- to 12-months, 12- to 24-months and 2T to 5T. The socks are packaged in a green and white sleeve with a Circo-brand logo on the front.

The socks, made in Hong Kong, were sold at Target stores nationwide from January 2007 to July 2008 for about $6.

Consumers should take these socks away from children and return them to the nearest Target store to receive a full refund.

BACKYARD PLAY SYSTEMS RECALLS OUTDOOR GLIDERS

Backyard Play Systems LLC is recalling about 500 outdoor playset gliders. Some of the gliders were shipped with assembly instructions that did not inform consumers to tighten all lock nuts during assembly, including those attached by the manufacturer. As a result, some lock nuts were not fully fastened during assembly which could cause the glider to detach, posing a fall hazard to children.

Backyard Play Systems has received one report of a lock nut falling off. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves outdoor play set gliders designed to hang from home play equipment. The green plastic gliders were sold as an accessory to home play equipment marketed under the brand names Heartland Play Systems, Yardline Play Systems and Backyard Play Systems.

The gliders, made in China, were sold by Backyard Buildings and More and Lowe’s stores nationwide, and online at Costco.com, BettyMills.com, and BackyardBuildings.com from February 2008 through July 2008 for about $100.

Consumers should immediately stop using the gliders until all lock nuts are securely fastened. Backyard Play Systems is notifying all customers directly and is providing written instructions indicating the location of all lock nuts that must be securely fastened.

HASBRO RECALLS NERF BLASTERS

Hasbro Inc. is recalling about 330,000 Nerf N-Strike Recon Blasters. The blaster’s plunger can pull the user’s skin during firing of the toy blaster resulting in injury to the face, neck, and/or chest.

Hasbro and CPSC have received 46 reports of injury to children aged 4 to 12, resulting in bruising, abrasions, pinching/pinch marks, blood blisters and welts.

This recall involves the Nerf N-Strike Recon CS-6 Blasters for children age 6 and up. The toy blaster is yellow with a black handle and orange plunger, trigger, and reload clip. The word “NERF” in black lettering is on both sides of the blaster and the word “ARMED” is indented on the orange plunger. “RECON CS-6” is on the gray cocking mechanism.

There are five interchangeable parts including the shoulder stock, the flip-up sight, barrel extension, quick re-load clip and dual-mode light beam. Model number 63552 and UPC codes 653569272021 and 653569311218 can be found on the packaging. Only blasters with an exposed orange plunger are included in this recall.

Wal-Mart, Target, Toys “R” Us, discount stores and toy stores nationwide sold the Nerf blasters, which were made in China, from November 2007 through August 2008 for about $20.

Consumers should immediately take the recalled toy blasters away from children and contact Hasbro for a free cylindrical cover to prevent additional injuries.

BRUNSWICK RECALLS ‘COLONIAL’ FOLDING GAME CHAIRS

Brunswick Bowling & Billiards Corp. is recalling aboug 1,700 folding game chairs. The retaining washers on the legs can loosen, causing the chair to become unstable. This poses a fall hazard to consumers.

Brunswick has received four reports of loose chair leg hardware. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves the ‘Colonial’ model, folding wooden chairs for use with game tables. They were sold in sets of two. The chairs have a black seat cushion and either a cherry or chestnut finish.

Authorized Brunswick dealers nationwide sold the chairs from March 2007 through March 2008 for about $400 per set. They were made in China.

Consumers should immediately stop using the folding game chairs and contact the dealer where the chairs were purchased to schedule a free repair.

TWEEN BRANDS RECALLS NECKLACES, CD AND MP3 PLAYERS

Tween Brands is recalling about 12,000 children’s necklaces, CD and MP3 players sold at Limited Too and Justice Stores. Surface coatings could contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

This recall involves a Ball and Heart Necklace with pink beads of varying sizes and a pink heart located in the center; a Portable CD Player with flowers and dots available in blue and pink; a pink MP3 Player with purple, green, blue, yellow, and red hearts; and a light blue MP3 Player with a picture of a monkey’s face on the front.

The items were sold by Limited Too and Justice retail stores nationwide, the Limited Too catazine (catalog), and on www.limitedtoo.com  from May 2007 through August 2008. The Ball and Heart Necklace sold for about $8, the Portable CD Players sold for about $25, and the MP3 Players sold for about $55. They were made in China.

Consumers should immediately take these recalled products away from children and return them to any Limited Too or Justice store for a full refund and a coupon for a 15% discount off a future purchase.

BUZZ’S BOATYARD RECALLS TOY BOATS

Buzz’s Boatyard is recalling about 200 toy boats. The paint on the recalled toy boats contains an excess level of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

This recall involves two models of tin Pop Pop toy boats. Models included in the recall are the 13-inch ‘Titanic’ and the ‘Hut’ Pop Pop boats.

The boats were sold through Buzz’s Boatyard’s Web site (http://www.buzzboats.com/) from April 2007 to November 2007 for between $3 and $12. They were made in India.

IKEA RECALLS KVIBY CHEST OF DRAWERS

IKEA is rcalling about 5,000 KVIBY chests of drawers. The glass drawer knobs on the chest can break either during assembly or in use, posing a laceration hazard to consumers.

IKEA has received three reports of laceration injuries requiring medical attention. An additional 11 injuries occurred outside of the U.S., where an additional 26,000 of the units were sold.

The recalled KVIBY Chest is white with 4 drawers and 6 glass knobs. The recall includes chests with article number 201-080-90 and a date stamp of 0817 (first two digits indicate the year; the second two digits indicate the week) or earlier. The article number and date stamp are located on a label attached to the underside of the chest. KVIBY chests with a date stamp of 0818 and later have improved replacement knobs and screws and are not included in the recall.

The chests were sold at IKEA stores nationwide from August 2007 through July 2008 for about $300. They were made in Denmark.

Consumers should protect their hands and carefully remove the glass knobs. Contact IKEA to receive free replacement knobs and screws by mail.
